You can paint a rubber ball to change its color and leave it with a shiny new exterior. Rubber balls are available in a wide variety of sizes to accommodate all kinds of active play. It may be difficult to find a ball in both the size and color scheme you are looking for. A few layers of paint and a little patience takes the rubber sphere from just another bouncing ball to a personalized toy craft.
Soak the corner of a cloth in isopropyl alcohol and thoroughly wipe down the surface of the rubber ball.
Position a pedestal in the center of your painting area (don't forget to cover the floor with some newspaper) 1. The pedestal can be a toilet paper tube for larger balls and an empty pen tube for smaller rubber balls. Place the ball on the pedestal.
Apply rubber primer to the topside of the ball. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions before turning the ball upside down and covering the other side with primer 2. Let it dry.
Apply a thin coat of the latex paint by holding the can at least 8 inches from the surface of the rubber ball at all times. Turn the ball over on the pedestal and paint the other side once the first half has dried completely. Continue spinning the ball around in the pedestal and adding thin layers of paint until you are satisfied with the color.
Tips
Allow the final coat of paint to dry overnight before using the rubber ball.
Store the rubber ball indoors and avoid extreme temperatures and moisture to protect the paint.
