Pillows to Prevent Flat Head

By Maggie New ; Updated June 13, 2017
A newborn baby laying in his crib.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has become less of a hazard since caregivers began implementing pediatrician- recommended strategies: no toys, loose blankets or any kinds of objects in the crib, and no sleeping on the stomach. Instead the baby only sleeps on his back, which has the unwelcome consequence of continuous pressure on the soft baby skull, which can eventually create a flat head. Several baby accessory companies now offer specially designed soft pillows to prevent this from happening.

Boppy Noggin Nest Head Support

The Bobby Noggin Nest Head Support cushion has a cut-out in the middle -- much like a donut -- so that the back of the head is not restrained at all. The sides are soft and cushioned. This pillow only works in a stroller or baby bouncer, or any time head support is called for when the baby is in a sitting position. This noggin nest will not work with the baby lying down on it because the cutout shape does not provide any support for the back of the head. You can purchase this product at Toys R Us, Target, and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Mimos Baby Pillow

The Mimos Baby Pillow manufacturers took a decidedly scientific approach with their design and what the pillow is supposed to do: this natural latex pillow reduces pressure against the head by providing 400 percent more surface area of contact than a traditional mattress. It also provides 180-degree free rotation of the head and neck. The Mimos Baby Pillow's 100 percent natural latex allows efficient air circulation through millions of air holes; it is also washable and chemical-free. You can purchase it online through plagiocephalyprevention.com, the company's website.

Babymoon Pillow

Another, perhaps more versatile pillow is the Babymoon pillow, which is shaped like a donut with an opening, creating two overlapping arms. One side of the opening has at its end a small velcro overlay through which the two arms can be connected to create a head support for babies 0 to 6 months, or the arms can be disconnected with a wider opening for neck support for babies aged 6 to 12 months. The pillow is soft but not fluffy and surrounds the head like a small lifesaver. The inventor and founder of the company that makes the pillow, mom Kelly Su who also happens to be a designer, cautions parents not to use the Babymoon pillow inside the crib, and to look at it merely as a supplement for making baby comfortable and not as a substitute for a mother's attention. Babies should not be left lying on this pillow for too long; even with the design and softness of a Babymoon pillow, a soft baby head could still become flat, given enough time. You can purchase the pillow online and in a few select stores throughout the country.
