How to Become a Certified Car Seat Installation Technician
As many as 7 out of 10 car seats are improperly installed. For that reason, the National Safe Kids Campaign created a Child Passenger Safety Technician certification program. Many local, state and national organizations offer the training needed to meet the requirements for this certification. If you'd like to become a certified child passenger safety technician, here is what you need to do.
Register with Safe Kids. You'll need to register with Safe Kids through their website (see Resources below) or by calling (877) 366-8154.
Search for a course in your area. Once a registered user on the Safe Kids website, you can search the course database for an organization in your area that teaches the coursework required to obtain certification. Courses are usually held over 4 to 5 days and include intensive classroom work, hands-on training and participation in an event where parents bring their cars and car seats to have them inspected by certified technicians. Courses cost about $60.
Participate in your course. Satisfactory completion of the coursework is required to obtain certification. Courses require students to pass a hands-on assessment, written examination and participation in a car seat check-up event where parents bring their cars and car seats to be inspected for proper installation.
Keep your certification current. Technicians are required to renew their certification every two years.
Minimum age for certification is 18. Certification is valid for two years.
Most car seats are improperly installed. Proper installation of car seats can prevent injury.
