Delaware may be a tiny state, but it's big on recreational activities. From its sandy beaches to its historical sites, there's a little bit of something for everyone. Parents looking to spend some quality time with their teenage daughter can find something to suit every taste, from musical entertainment to shopping and dining.
A lot of little girls dream about becoming a ballerina. Even if pirouettes aren't part of your teen's childhood memories, she might still enjoy a performance at the Ballet Theater of Delaware, whether romantic and tender "Swan Lake" or the darker but thrilling "Phantom of the Opera." If a faster pace is more her speed, the Firefly Music Festival, held every summer, offers a blend of classic and contemporary acts -- perfect for both of you to enjoy. Some past acts have included Tom Petty, MGMT and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Beauty and Shopping
There are plenty of great places to shop or to enjoy a good mani pedi while you chat and relax. Head to Wilmington to get makeovers at the Adora Bella Salon before moving on to shopping at the Concord Mall, just north of Wilmington. Adora Bella claims to be a premier beauty salon, and it offers a full range of services, from cuts and coloring to professional makeup applications. At the Concord Mall, you can shop at teen-friendly stores such as Claire's Boutique and Hollister.
If your daughter isn't into makeup and shopping as much as outdoorsy adventures, she'll be happy to find that Delaware isn't all about the great indoors. The Delaware Geocaching Trail features 69 cache locations that nestle in terrain and landscapes such as lavender fields, state parks and grand du Pont estates. The cache locations also host festivals throughout the year. At the Alapocas Run State Park, take a rock-climbing course together, of if you already are skilled climbers, bring your gear and head to the rocks. Alternatively at the park, you can go for a scenic stroll amid lovely landscaping and past a picturesque barn. When you're finished, you enjoy a nice picnic together.
You're never too old to have fun at the state fair. Take your teenage daughter to the Delaware State Fair for a ride on the Ferris wheel and a funnel cake. Check out exhibits, booths and other attractions. When the fair's not in season, head down to Rehoboth Beach for classic fair-type rides at Funland, and enjoy some fun mother-daughter competition while you play arcade and midway games.
