Kids will love Peachtree City as soon as they realize that golf carts are this Georgia city’s preferred mode of transportation. Peachtree City’s golf course paths traverse the city and you can get almost anywhere you need to go via cart. Though Peachtree City is just a 30-mile drive from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta, this active community has plenty of kid-friendly fun close to home.
Visit the Park
Peachtree City’s parks make an ideal destination for a family outing. The largest playground is the All Children’s Playground at Picnic Park. Designed to accommodate children with special needs, the playground is features slides, walkways, swings and more. The five-acre park also has a horseshoe court, grassy open areas and a fishing pond. You’ll find another playground at Beaver Dam Park on North Mead Drive. If your kids are into skateboarding, visit the skateboard ramp at the McIntosh Trail Recreation Complex.
Kids can explore more than 500 acres of wetland habitat at the Flat Creek Nature Area (sctlandtrust.org). Use the numbered markers on the boardwalk to identify trees like the chestnut oak and red maple that grow in the Georgia wetlands. Bring a change of clothes when you visit Line Creek Nature Area (sctlandtrust.org). There’s a lot to explore on the miles of nature trails that cut through this 70-acre forest, but kids will head straight to the creek shoals, which are perfect for splashing. Encourage your kids to be careful if they want to climb the park’s granite outcroppings -- they can be slippery.
Enjoy the Water
Peachtree City’s two lakes make an enjoyable family destination. If you want to swim in the lake, head for Lake Peachtree with a local pal -- the 270-acre lake is for Peachtree City residents only. If you don’t have a local connection, Lake Kedron is open to the public. You can’t swim, but you can take a boat to explore the water or take the kids fishing. You’ll need to pick up a Georgia fishing license -- and be prepared to show it -- but kids younger than 16 can fish without a license.
Younger kids may enjoy story time at the Peachtree City Library. The library also hosts activities and events for kids throughout the year, but you’ll have to stop by Willowbend Road location to find out what’s on the current schedule. If you need a place to play indoors, take the 8-mile drive into nearby Newnan to spend a few hours at Monkey Joes’s (monkeyjoes.com). The indoor playground’s soft slides, bounce houses and obstacle courses will entertain the kids for hours.
