How to Install a Primo Viaggio

By Contributor

When infants younger than 1 year old and weighing less than 20 pounds are transported in an automobile, federal regulations require that the car seat in which they ride meets the requisites of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213. State Farm Insurance Company and other entities estimate that as many as 90 percent of car seats in the United States are incorrectly installed. It is extremely important that the car seat be correctly installed for the seat to function properly and protect its young occupant. These car seat installation instructions are applicable to a Primo Viaggio car seat, manufactured by Peg Perego of Italy. Primo Viaggio is a well-known premium car seat noted for its side-impact protection system.

Seat Belt System

Park the vehicle with the Viaggio car seat on level ground. Separate the car seat from the car seat base by squeezing together the two handles on the back of the seat and lifting the seat from the base.

Place the seat base on the rear automobile seat, facing the rear of the car. (It is required that the child be facing the rear of the car when strapped into a car seat.) Check the level indicator on the side of the seat base to ensure the base is level. If necessary, turn the knob until the ball is in the green area.

Locate the belt slots on the seat base. Then thread the lap belt through those slots and insert the latch plate on the end of the lap belt into the buckle until it clicks.

Tighten the seat belt as much as possible by pulling on the belt while pushing down on the seat base with your weight. Then check to see if the base moves more than 1 inch. If it does, tighten the belt further. Check the level indicator again. If necessary, turn the knob to position the ball within the green area.

Install the car seat on the car seat base. Use the seat handle to position the seat facing the rear of the car. Press the car seat down on the slots in the car seat base until you hear a click and the seat is firmly attached to the base. (You should not be able to move the assembled car seat.) Check the level indicator to verify that the car seat is still level and adjust if necessary. Adjust the handle of the car seat so that it rests on the top edge of the car seat, toward the front of the car.

LATCH System

Determine if your car has a latch bar. Reach between the seat bottom and the seat back of the rear seat to locate the universal lower anchor bar. If your car has a latch bar, proceed to Step 2. If it does not have a latch bar, install the car seat base using the seat belt system.

Remove the two anchor latches from their holders. Press on the gray button and pull on the strap to loosen it, then press the red button located on top of the latch and pull the latch from its holder. Repeat for the other side.

Connect the latches to the anchor bar. Push one of the latches onto the anchor bar until you hear it click. Repeat for the other latch.

Tighten the car seat base against the seat. Pull on the free end of the latch strap to tighten the car seat base against the seat. Then put your weight on to the base while pulling on the strap to tighten the strap further. Check to see if the base moves more than 1 inch. If it does, tighten the belt further. Tip

Once the car seat has been installed, you may have to loosen the seat belt slightly in order to adjust the level indicator.

Warning

If you cannot get the seat belt tight enough to keep the car seat from moving, refer to your automobile owner’s manual for further instruction. It is not safe to transport infants in a loose car seat. Do not install this car seat on cars with motorized lap or shoulder straps or on cars with the car seat belts mounted on the door.
