Winter Activities for Kids in Annapolis, Maryland
The capital city of Maryland, Annapolis is a waterfront metropolis, where you’re just as likely to hail a water taxi as a traditional cab to reach your destination 2. Be prepared for rain, sleet and snow during cold weather since Annapolis’s location usually means lots of year-round precipitation. Don’t let that deter you from a wintertime trip, however, because cold weather means fewer crowds and activities you can enjoy only during the winter months.
Visit a Museum
The Chesapeake Children’s Museum (theccm.org) is more like an indoor playground spread over multiple rooms than a traditional museum 1. Kids can roam through the different play areas or sign up for one of the museum’s classes. Check the online calendar for the museum’s schedule of upcoming workshops. At the Annapolis Maritime Museum (amaritime.org), kids can explore interactive exhibits that tell the story of Maryland’s fishing and sailing heritage at the Bay Experience Center 2. Getting to touch the giant oyster’s heart will likely be a memorable moment for many kids. Kids hooked on spy stories will not want to miss the National Security Agency’s National Cryptologic Museum (nsa.gov), a museum dedicated to the history of secret codes 3.
Do a Little Browsing
Cold weather is the perfect excuse to visit the Anne Arundel County Library’s Annapolis Area Branch (aacpl.net) 24. In addition to plenty of new and classic children’s books, your kids can enjoy story times or special activities. Check the library’s online calendar for upcoming events. Kids will be fascinated by the colonial toys on display at the Historic Annapolis Museum Store (annapolis.org) 25. This little shop is a great place for kids to spend their souvenir budget. Kids might also want to browse the extensive collection of model ships at Fawcett Boat Supplies (fawcettboat.com) 6.
You won’t want to take a dip in the Chesapeake Bay during the winter, but there is more than swimming to entertain the kids at Sandy Point State Park (dnr.state.md.us). The 786-acre park is open year-round, and winter is an ideal time to explore the park’s Symbi Trail through the forest and marshlands. Winter is also prime fishing time for some of the fish in the Chesapeake waters, and you can rent a boat at the park’s marina. The outdoor ice skating rink at Quiet Waters Park (aacounty.org) is only open during the winter 7. Rent skates and safety gear at the rink.
Enjoy a Winter Event
Only in December can kids watch a fleet of boats sailing past decked out in glowing holiday lights. The Eastport Yacht Club (eastportyc.org) Light Parade sails along the Annapolis Spa Creek waterfront 2. Kids are welcome to join the shivering participants in the annual Maryland Polar Bear Plunge (plungemd.com). The Pee Wee Plunge, which involves jumping into a kiddy pool rather than the Chesapeake Bay, is for children 8 years old and younger 1. Kids might also enjoy the New Year’s Eve City Celebration and Fireworks (downtownannapolis.org) at the City Dock.
