The rapidly growing city of Rio Rancho is located 16 miles northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The city has a family-friendly environment and a mild desert climate. It is home to minor league basketball and hockey teams -- and offers both indoor and outdoor fun activities to keep kids busy and entertained.
The city of Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department provides a few well-maintained parks. Haynes Park has playgrounds, wetlands, hiking trails, barbecue pits, horseshoe pits, playing fields, picnicking areas, a basketball court and tennis courts. At Cabezon Park, your kids can play volleyball, have fun on the playground and picnic in shade. The park also hosts events such as Movies Under the Stars and Rio Rancho's Largest Yard Sale. If you have skateboard enthusiasts in your midst, Star Heights Recreation Center provides a skate park along with basketball courts, a recreation center and playgrounds.
With the warm southwestern weather, you'll want to find places to stay cool. The city of Rio Rancho operates three outdoor pools and one indoor aquatic center. The Rio Rancho Aquatic Center has two big water slides for the older kids and splash features for the younger ones. The Haynes Community Center Pool also has water slides and splash features, as well as a water basketball hoop. The Rainbow Pool caters to families and offers recreational water fun for all ages. The Cabezon Community Center Pool is yet another outdoor swimming option with designated lanes for future Olympians to practice swimming laps.
For some indoor fun, take the kids to Tenpins & More, a bowling alley with glow-in-the-dark bowling, league play, a full snack bar and free youth seminars that teach kids some key bowling skills. However, if you happen to have kids who never seem to get enough toy cars, J&R Vintage Autos, a museum with a large collection of die-cast toys including vintage cars, tug boats and trucks, might just thrill them. The toy vehicles are for your viewing pleasure -- and some are available for purchase. The museum also houses more than 60 antique cars and trucks.
If you want to get your kids involved in sports in Rio Rancho, there are several options available. Blades Multiplex Arena has open ice skating, broomball games, ice skating lessons and pick-up hockey games. Eagle Ride Gym offers gymnastics programs for all ages and skill levels including competitive gymnastics teams for boys and girls, as well as parent-tot, preschool, kindergym, tumble, cheer and recreational classes. They provide open gym times and summer camps as well. You can also sign up your school-age kids for flag football, track and field, and even an archery league through the city of Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
