Things to Do for Kids in Mesquite, Nevada
Mesquite, Nevada, offers a variety of attractions for adults and children. It is home to casinos, golf courses, and serves as a jumping-off point to many outdoor recreation sites. Mesquite, a little more than an hour drive east of Las Vegas, also has a cultural side, featuring museums and a fine arts center. Kids of all ages will enjoy the activities this border town has to offer.
The city recreation center offers racquetball and basketball courts, a game room with foosball and pingpong, and a heated indoor pool. In the summer, kids can take advantage of the outdoor pool, complete with water slide. Northwest of the recreation center is the Mesquite Sports and Event Complex. This facility has five athletic fields, a picnic area and a splash pad play area. Families can enjoy special events that include archery and golf.
Museum and Fine Arts Center
Mesquite is home to the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum, which has both permanent and rotating exhibits that highlight the history of the city and surrounding area 1. Admission is free. The city also features a fine arts center, featuring works by local artists in its galleries. The center also offers a pottery studio, workshops and classes for a fee.
The Virgin River Hotel/Casino is home to Mesquite's only bowling center 2. It has 24 lanes, a snack bar and cosmic bowling. Birthday parties can be arranged and include bowling, shoe rental and food.
Mesquite is near several national parks and outdoor attractions, including Zion National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead Recreation Area. The city and surrounding valley also offers off-roading trails. One of the largest is the Gold Butte Back Country Byway, a 62-mile trail that leads through Gold Butte, an old mining town, and travels past petroglyphs and rock formations 3.
Throughout the year, Mesquite offers family friendly events. The Mesquite Balloon Festival is in January. It is free for all to view. The balloons take off in the early morning and provide a glow show in the evening. Tethered rides are available for a fee. Another family fun event is the Smokin' in Mesquite BBQ Championship 4. This competition is in late August and features competitors from around the West.
