Things to Do on an April Vacation in Maine with Kids

Maine is home to some stunning national parks and wilderness areas.

Families choose Maine as their vacation destination for all sorts of reasons, whether it be the breathtaking coastline with humpback whales moving about, the serene forests full of amazing wildlife like bears and moose or the liveliness of it's cities. When you plan your Maine vacation in April, you need to be prepared for the roller coaster of weather that can range from warm, sunny days to cold, heavy snowfalls, depending on what part of the state you're visiting. Planning an assortment of both indoor and outdoor activities for your family will be your best bet.

Wildlife and Animal Activities

In southern Maine, about 30 minutes from Portland, near the town of Gray, you can take your family to explore the Maine Wildlife Park. Drop by to take an audio tour of the interesting wildlife exhibits throughout the park, including more than 30 native Maine wildlife species and a visitors center with an assortment of animal furs. Or, experience York's Wild Kingdom with your kids, at York Beach near the southern tip of Maine. You'll find 25 acres of fun, including a zoo with 75 displays featuring animals from around the globe, as well as amusements, such as a Ferris wheel, train, swings, bumper boats and castle bounce. Alternatively, you could take a moose or wildlife tour with New England Outdoor Center, in northern Maine near Millinocket. Tours are given by water, in a pontoon boat or canoe, or by land and give visitors an opportunity to see things like great blue heron, whitetail deer, black bears, moose and bald eagles.

Resort Activities

Plan to stay at one of Maine's gorgeous resorts during your vacation. At Spruce Point Inn Resort and Spa, along the coast, your family can participate in a broad range of activities, including inshore and offshore fishing, hiking, harbor tours, golf and children's programs, such as Kids' Night Out and Lighthouse Camp. Activities offered at this family-friendly resort include disc golf, tennis, hiking, mountain biking and trips to the Maine Golf Hall of Fame.

Or, attend the annual Kora Shrine Cirus, in Lewiston, around 50 minutes north of Portland.
