Snow tubing is a modern twist on traditional sledding that is gaining momentum in the Boone, North Carolina area. Whether you are taking a break from skiing and snowboarding, or looking for a winter activity that the whole family can enjoy, snow tubing requires minimal gear and skill. Meander along a gentle slope and take in the mountain views or zoom down a steep grade for a high-adrenaline experience.


Hawksnest’s website claims that it is the largest snow tubing park on the East Coast, and is located about 30 minutes from Boone in Banner Elk, NC. With 20 different tubing runs and two conveyor lifts to take snow tubers to the top, visitors are certain to find the perfect ride. The lodge at Hawksnest offers warm drinks and food, a cozy fire and a deck to watch all of the action. The park also features the longest zip-line tour on the East Coast, with 19 cables to zoom across the forest.

Sugar Mountain

Sugar Mountain Resort in Banner Elk, NC, offers snow tubing sessions during the day at nighttime. Built on the Sugar Mountain Golf Course, its runs are 700 feet long and feature an automatic lift to take visitors to the top of the mountain. The resort has a snowmaking machine and grooms the tubing runs on a regular basis for an exciting experience every time. Kids ages three and up can enjoy the thrill of gliding down the mountain on a snow tube.

Beech Mountain

Less than 25 miles from Boone in the heart of Beech Mountain, visitors under age 12 can glide down the mountainside in a snow tube at no cost on the town’s sledding hill. The hill does not feature an automatic lift conveyor, but it has a snow machine for clear, cold days. Public restrooms are at the visitor center next door and at the bottom of the hill, you will find tables where you can sit and share a warm snack with the kids.

Jonas Ridge

Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing center is located approximately 30 minutes south of Boone, in Jonas Ridge, NC. The facility features six separate tubing lanes and a conveyor belt to carry tubers back to the top for another run. Snow making, lights for night tubing and a cozy observation deck bring visitors back each season. Professional photographers are on the runs to take souvenir pictures of your snow tubing experience.
