Henrico County, which lies between the Chickahominy and James rivers in Virginia, boasts 15 cities, including Wyndham, Glen Allen, Montrose and Chamberlayne. There were more than 310,000 people living in this area surrounding the capital of Richmond, as of the 2011 census. Choose from a variety of outdoor activities in the area, including more than 30 parks maintained by the Henrico County Recreation and Parks Department (co.henrico.va.us/rec). You'll find playgrounds, athletic fields and sometimes special events, like the Harvest Festival and the Kite Festival. Plan a day of fishing at one of the Henrico County park's lakes. Three Lakes Park and Nature Center (no website; Sausiluta Dr., Henrico; 804-262-5055) also has a visitor's center with hands-on exhibits and nature programs that take place throughout the year. During the summer, take a dip at one of the county pools, including Roxbury Pool (roxburypool.org) where you'll find a large pool for the big kids and a separate kiddie pool for the little ones.
Visit one of the Henrico County Public Library branches (henricolibrary.org). You can take your little ones for one of the storytimes. Lapsit Lambs is for pre-walkers and younger, Mother Goose is for little ones 6- to 24-months-old, Toddler Time is for youngsters 24- to 36-months-old and Preschool Time is for 3- to 5-year-olds. There is also Family Storytime for children 3 and up, along with family members. Each storytime includes activities like stories, music, movement and crafts. You could also attend one of the movie nights with your kids, like Pajama Movie Night where you all come dressed in your PJs and bring along a pillow and blanket to get comfy while watching the movie.
Classes and Camps
Enroll your child in one of the classes or camps in Henrico County. The Shady Grove Family YMCA (ymcarichmond.org/shady-grove) offers a variety of programs and camps. Choose from Youth Dance with ballet, tu tu and jazz, Youth Cheerleading or Youth Martial Arts, to teach your child the art of Taekwondo. During the summer, day camps are available with drama, swimming, archery and sports. Classes are also offered through the County of Henrico Recreation and Parks Department (co.henrico.va.us), such as Arts and Crafts, Nature and Outdoors, Cooking, Music and Theatre, and Kiddie Kollege.
If you're stuck inside on a rainy day, there are still activities you can participate in around Henrico County. There are some museums to visit, including Dabbs House Museum (3812 Nine Mile Road, Henrico; 804-652-3406) and Meadow Farm Museum ( 3400 Mountain Rd., Glen Allen; 804-501-2130). Or, you can visit Romp n' Roll (rompnroll.com) in Glen Allen to let your child run and play. This play facility regularly holds open gym in the indoor playground. There are also art, music and sports programs offered.
