DuBois, Pennsylvania is located less than two hours from Pittsburgh and is a relatively small town with a population of about 7,794, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. While the town features a lot of historical attractions, including an entire historical district, there are a handful of places in and near DuBois that are fitting for kids to play and learn in both indoor and outdoor settings.
The DuBois Public Library has a children’s area that was renovated in 2010. With scheduled story times, colorful area rugs, a wooden train set, and a puppet theater, kids can play and learn in this fun and safe environment. In addition to reading books in a variety of subjects, kids can also explore one of the library’s Discovery Kits, which are themed around topics like weather and insects and include books, finger plays, music and games. Less than 20 minutes away from the DuBois Public Library is the Mengle Memorial Library in Brockway. The Mengle Memorial Library offers summer reading programs for toddlers to teens as well as weekly story reading times. The brightly decorated children's reading room also provides kid-sized furniture and opportunities for dramatic play.
The Quarry Gymnastics Center has classes for children ranging from preschoolers to high schoolers. The full-featured gymnastics center includes equipment such as an air mat, foam pit, balance beams and a trampoline. At Rick’s Academy of Self Defense, children ranging from kindergarten to grade 8 can join the Karate Kids Klub, which teaches self-defense and aims to improve self-esteem. The full-time studio also offers adult classes and family discounts.
DuBois City Memorial Park offers picnic pavilions and basketball courts. Additionally, the park has a community pool with regular open swim times. Sandy Township Recreational Park has two playground structures and areas for basketball, baseball and volleyball, in addition to pavilions for special events. Approximately a 30 minute drive from DuBois is the Parker Dam State Park with 968 acres of hiking, camping and swimming. The swimming area has buoys marking safe depths at 5 feet and 2 feet for young swimmers. Kids visiting Parker Dam State Park might be lucky enough to spot wildlife like turkeys, deer, elk and porcupines.
DuBois Mall offers a chance for kids and parents to go shopping for toys or visit the pet store. The varied food court includes a pretzel shop, while the mall features a Milk & Cookies with Santa event every year during the holiday season. Also located at DuBois Mall is the area’s main theater, Carmike Cinemas, which shows popular kid-friendly movies and provides a concessions stand. At Dr. Doolittle's Roadside Cafe & Creamery, kids can indulge in homemade ice cream flavors like peanut butter swirl, teaberry and cool mint fudge. This cafe also has a variety of fun family-friendly activities available, like laser tag and miniature golf.
