The Appropriate Foods for a 9 Month Old Baby

Feeding a 9-month-old baby can be a challenge because they are transitioning from pureed baby food to table foods. Coming up with nutritious appropriate foods can be easy if you know what to look for and what your baby prefers. While babies at 9 months are getting many nutrients that they need from breast milk or formula, their diets are slowly being taken over by food and less by breast milk or formula.

Mixing Foods

Start to introduce table foods to your 9 month old by mixing new solids with pureed foods that your baby currently enjoys. For example if your 9 month old likes pureed pears, you can use the pears as a topping for pancakes or yogurt. For a more savory example, you can mix pureed green beans with small soft-cooked noodles. Keep a close eye on your baby when introducing these mixtures in case they choke. Avoid honey, added salt and sugar and hot spices in foods.

Giving your 9 month old baby a variety of finger foods is an appropriate way to introduce them to table foods. Fruit, cheese and bread all ideal starter finger foods for your baby. Cut or tear the food into small bite-sized pieces so they are easy for your baby to chew and swallow. There are many finger foods that you can purchase or you can make your own.

A 9 month old's portion size is much smaller than an adult's. Two tablespoons to ¼ cup of food is an ideal portion size for a 9 month old baby. Including all of the food groups in each of the baby's three meals is essential for their nutrition, keeping portion sizes in mind. Remember that every 9 month old is different. Growth spurts at different times can cause your baby to eat more and less from day to day. Don't force feed them. Instead, allow them to eat at their own pace and until they are full.

Offering your baby a variety of foods at all stages of development is important. It allows them to taste different foods and explore new textures. Introduce one food at a time so you can pinpoint any allergic reactions to a recently introduced food. Use juice as an occasional treat and water for everyday thirst.
