Afton Alps Recreation Area, nestled along the St. Croix River in central Minnesota, is the destination for many visitors throughout the year. This resort features snow activities during the winter months and golf and mountain biking in the summer. While there aren't toddler activities right at Afton Alps, there are plenty of things to keep your toddler busy in the surrounding area.
Take your little one to one of the 40 parks maintained by the City of Woodbury Minnesota (ci.woodbury.mn.us), just 18 minutes away from After Alps. Visit Central Park (no website; 8595 Central Park Place, Woodbury; 651-414-3434) where you'll find a large indoor playground, ideal for toddlers. It features a treehouse, mountain spiral slide, climbing tubes and a forest. Victoria Park (no website; 7430 Newbury Road, Woodbury; 651-714-3500) has an outdoor children's playground and picnic areas. Tamarack Nature Preserve (no website; 1825 Tower Drive, Woodbury; 651-714-3500) features a play structure, ice skating rink in the winter and two miles of trails through the swamp areas. You could also go to the Carpenter Nature Center (carpenternaturecenter.org) with your tot, only 10 minutes away in Hastings. This 300-acre nature preserve has hiking trails, river beach access and a visitor center.
Your toddler can enjoy an assortment of free programs at some of the libraries in the area. Make the 10-minute drive to Hastings to visit the Pleasant Hill Library (no website; 1490 South Frontage Road, Hastings; 651-438-0200). Programs include toddler storytimes, family storytimes, craft activities and art programs. Or, visit the R.H. Stafford Branch library (no website; 8595 Central Park Place, Woodbury; 651-731-1320), 18 minutes away in Woodbury. Your toddler can participate in the Summer Reading program, with your help of course. There are also puppet shows, storytimes and sing-alongs at this library.
You can also take your little one for some water fun at The Hastings Family Aquatic Center (no website; 901 Maple Street, Hastings; 651-480-2385). Your toddler can swim, go down the kids' slides and play on the children's water play structure. Enjoy this center from June to August each year. You can go for water activities any time of the year at the Woodbury YMCA (no website; 2175 Radio Drive, Woodbury; 651-731-9507). This facility has an indoor lap pool and a warm water, zero-depth entry leisure pool with waterslide.

Your toddler can participate in Family Messy Play, an art class that uses paint, mud, shaving cream and bubble art. Or, sign your little one up for Making Music Together, with singing, movement, and other activities. You can also sign your child up for programs and classes through the Hastings Department of Parks and Recreation (ci.hastings.mn.us). Classes for toddlers include Daytime Tiny Toddlers, Family Mornings and Toddler Activity Night.
