Art and Film Activities
Planet Pottery -- located in the Atlantic Palms Shopping Center -- is a fun venue for kids where they can paint their own pottery. Kids can choose from among mugs, pet bowls and other pottery pieces to paint. Do you kids love music and visual art? Introduce your children to local artists, musicians and artworks at the North Beaches' Art Walk. The event takes places the third Thursday of every month in Atlantic Beach. More than twenty locations participate in the art walk to showcase art and provide refreshments. Another event kids enjoy is the free movie night that takes place at Russell Park. The movie starts at dusk on the basketball court. Free popcorn is available at the event.
Introduce your children to the works of Shakespeare at the performances of Shakespeare in the Park. The University of North Florida puts on the performances in Atlantic Beach in the springtime. Atlantic Beach Experimental Theatre has put on live community productions for more than 20 years. The theater hosts live performances throughout the year that you can attend as a family. The theater also offers kid-friendly activities such as children’s workshops, summer camps and children’s spring break workshops.
On a warm Florida day, take the kids to one of Atlantic Beach’s parks. Dutton Island Preserve is the city’s largest park, and offers an assortment of family-friendly activities. Make reservations to take the kids on a camping adventure, take a hike on the park’s 9,000 feet of nature trails, enjoy a picnic or bring fishing gear to catch dinner off the pier. Kayak rentals and tours are also available at the park through Nautical Escapes. Johansen Park is located blocks from the ocean so you can enjoy a cool breeze on a sunny day. The park also features areas for picnicking. The last Saturday in April, the park is host to Arts in the Park, which is a family-friendly event that features food and music, and showcases the work of local artists.
Enjoy the sunshine and ocean and take the kids to the beach. Bring a Frisbee, build a sandcastle or relax to the sound of the waves. There are a wide variety of public beach access locations throughout the city. Visit Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park and take advantage of the amenities to go hiking, biking or camping. It’s a 1 1/2-mile stretch of beach that is a well-known surfing spot in Northern Florida.
