How to Train a Baby to Sleep Alone

When you have a new baby you do not want to let him/her out of your sight. This is true even at night when it is time for bed so you let sleep the baby sleep with you. A few months go by and when you try to get your baby to sleep alone they cry and cry. The bad habit of co-sleeping has been ingrained into your child and they do not want to sleep alone. Following a few simple tips can help parents teach their baby to sleep alone.

Get your child used to their room. Spend time in there during the day while the baby is awake. Read to the baby and play with him or her in the room. Do things that make the baby feel happy. This will allow the baby to associate that room with happiness and safety. Doing this will make it easier for the child to transition from your room to its own room.

Get the baby used to the crib. Just like you want the child to get used to its room, you want him or her to get used to the crib as well. Place the baby in the crib during the day for short periods of time. Surround the baby with his or her favorite toys, stuffed animals and blanket. Play some soft lullaby music as the baby plays. Allow the baby to realize that the crib is nothing to be scared of. Always keep an eye on the baby while he or she plays in the crib.

When it is time for the baby to go to sleep, place him or her in a pair of their own pajamas that you have recently held close to your body or have slept with. Your scent on the item will comfort the baby through the night.

Leave a baby monitor in the room and quickly check on the baby every time it cries. This will help the baby to realize that you are not far away. If need be, take the baby out of the crib and rock it to sleep. The baby needs to know that if they need you, you will be there. As the nights go on, the amount of time between cries will likely get longer and longer.

Make sure that you make the baby as comfortable as can be. Keep the room dark and quiet and at a moderate temperature. Play some soft music to lull them to sleep. They may also respond well to white noise which is a repetitive sound like a running faucet or the hum of a fan.
