Ellensburg, situated right in the center of Washington, is the county seat of Kittitas County. This city of around 18,000 is surrounded by Kittitas Valley and lies nears the Cascade Range. Parents living in Ellensburg, or visiting with their family, will find a variety of entertaining activities to keep their toddler happy and busy.
At the Children's Activity Museum (childrensactivitymuseum.org), your toddler can get hands-on with a number of interactive exhibits created to encourage children to use their imaginations. New exhibits are rotated in throughout the year to keep things exciting and fun for the little ones. In the winter, your toddler can help build toys in Santa's Workshop or don an elf suit and listen to a story by the fire. You can also take your little one to the Ellensburg Public Library (no website; 501 North Anderson St., Ellensburg; 509-962-7250) for some learning fun. Toddlers can participate in Toddler Storytime for stories, music, movement and tot-size activities or you both can join in on a Special Family Night with an array of family-friendly activities.
Park or Pool
Get your toddler outside for some fresh air and exercise at one of the area city parks. The City of Ellensburg Washington Parks and Recreation Department (ci.ellensburg.wa.us) maintains more than 230 acres and 20 parks. Kiwanis Park (no website; N. A St. and Fourteenth Ave., Ellensburg; 509-962-7204) covers 4 acres and features a large play structure for children, as well as a grassy area for free play. Or, you can take your little one to Memorial Pool and Fitness Center (no website; 815 E. Sixth Ave., Ellensburg; 509-962-7211) for some water play. This facility has a heated indoor pool with open swim times available.
Another way to keep your toddler busy in Ellensburg is to sign her up for a toddler class or program. The City of Ellensburg Washington Youth Center (no website; 406 E. Capitol, Ellensburg; 509-962-7204) is a 5,348 square-foot facility with a games room, lounge area and children's activities. Your toddler can participate in arts and crafts or one of the classes offered. Or, you can sign your child up for a dance class at Stage Door Dance Studio (stagedoordance.org). Kids 2 to 5 can participate in the Youth Children's Program and those 2 to 4 are welcome to join the Music and Movement class, an introduction to music and movement.
Make plans to attend some of the events that take place in the community throughout the year, like the Kittitas County Fair (kittitascountyfair.com), which is held annually. There is always live entertainment, a kids' pedal tractor pull, carnival rides, live animals and children's activities. You can also take your little one to watch the Ellensburg Rodeo (ellensburgrodeo.com). In addition to the rodeo action, you and your toddler can watch a parade, enjoy the antics of the rodeo clowns and watch some Native American dancing and the chuck wagon races.
