The city of Dover, Delaware was founded is 1683 by William Penn and is the capital city of this first state. Its rich and lengthy history provides for some interesting places for kids to visit. According to the 2011 U.S. Census estimate, the population is 36,560, making for a small-town atmosphere while still being large enough to have a good selection of children's activities.
The Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village (agriculturalmuseum.org) features exhibits highlighting the agricultural advances and ingenuity of Delawareans over the centuries. Guided tours are available that will take the kids through the Loockerman Landing Village, which is a replica of a rural town of the 1890's, and through the rest of the museum. Kids will also likely enjoy the Air Mobility Command Museum (amcmuseum.org), which has dozens of historic war aircraft on display including the Globemaster, the first long range airlifter.
The city of Dover (cityofdover.com) offers several sports programs for kids. For preschoolers, the Learn-N-Play Sports class is a parent-child class, which teaches kids the basics of skills used in sports through drills and games. Instructional classes for school-age children are available in baseball, football, tennis and basketball. Summer basketball leagues take place throughout the city as well. Dover Little League (doverll.com) is also an option for the kids. T-ball leagues are open to 4- to 7-year-olds, while there are baseball leagues for 8- to 12-year-olds.
Dover provides the community with several parks for kids of all ages. Silver Lake Park (no website; Washington Street; 302-674-7541) is 182-acres of recreational space including playground equipment specifically for toddlers and preschoolers, playgrounds for school-age kids, a lake for fishing, boating and water skiing and walking paths. Schutte Park (no website; Schutte Park; 302-674-7541) provides playgrounds, basketball courts, volleyball and sports fields open to the public. Dover Park (no website; 1210 White Oak Road; 302-674-7541) features tennis courts, picnicking areas, basketball courts and a disc golf course that the kids might want to try.
Dance and Music Classes
The Dance Conservatory (dancebtd.com) offers classical ballet classes at all levels. Here, kids can learn other styles of dance as well including jazz, tap, hip-hop, theatre dance and modern. It offers dance camps during the summer for ages 5 and up. The Dance Factory (dancefactorydover.com) also provides kids with a variety of dance classes including acrobatics, ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap and hip-hop. Kinder Musik (kindermusik.com) offers music classes for infants through age 7 in which kids can develop vocal skills, fine and gross motor skills and social skills in a fun environment.
