Children who live in and around the Pennsylvania towns of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton can enjoy themselves while learning at one of the Lehigh Valley's summer camp programs. From the streams, woods and mountains of the Poconos to the university campuses, museums and centers for the arts, the Lehigh Valley is the perfect place to develop skills, make friends and enjoy new experiences.
Help your child develop his skills as an artist at one of the Banana Factory's summer arts camps. Part of the Lehigh Valley's very own Arts Quest Center for the Arts in Bethlehem, Banana Factory specialty camps include adventures in expression through clay, glass, jewelry design, photography and puppets. The State Theater in Easton will take center stage with any child who's been struck by the acting bug. For 11 years, State Theater has been offering Lehigh Valley's budding actors, from first grade through high school, the opportunity to explore the craft of acting while getting tips for auditions and learning about improv, choreography, musical technique and show preparation.
Animals and Nature
You won't need to look outside the Lehigh Valley to indulge your child's passion for outdoor adventure or her desire to work with animals. The Valley's Blue Mountain Adventure Camp, located in the Pocono Mountains, offers children the opportunity to connect with nature through hands-on, "Survivor"-type activities, like zip lining over treetops, exploring the ponds and streams with river guides, navigating the mountains and woods with a compass and learning how to build shelters, start a fire and cook food. Animal lovers and budding conservationists alike will jump at the chance to learn first-hand about the ins and outs of running a zoo. The Lehigh Valley Zoo offers several camps where children can learn about caring for animals through behind-the-scene tours and activities and apply what they learn as they explore other wildlife areas in and around the Lehigh Valley.
Whether your child dreams of becoming a doctor, inventor or researcher, help him nurture his inner scientist over the summer at one of Lehigh Valley's science camps. The Da Vinci Center will captivate your child as he learns all about the human body in mini-medical school or conducts experiments in chemistry, biology, geology and electronics. Your child will use all five senses as he has fun with science at the "Creatures, Chemistry and Catapults" science camp at the Lower Mucungie Community Center. Not only will he get a taste for science, he'll be able to proudly bring home some of his projects to share with parents and friends.
The Valley is home to some of Pennsylvania's finest college athletic programs. Your child can hone her athletic skills at one of the many Lehigh Valley sports camps, including those offered by the athletic departments at either Lehigh University or DeSales University. Summer sports camps at DeSales include basketball, softball, baseball and soccer for boys and girls as young as 7 years of age, while neighboring -- and rival -- Lehigh University offers a multi-sports program to teach children as young as 4 years old the fundamentals of sports and sportsmanship.
