How to Prevent My Kids From Viewing Online Porn

By Lynda Moultry Belcher

The ever-growing popularity of the Internet has made it harder than ever for parents to control their children's access to inappropriate materials, including online pornography. There are several steps you can take to try to control their access. However, it is only through frank discussion and frequent monitoring that you can truly be sure of what exactly your child is viewing when spending time surfing the Internet.

Install a password-protecting program on your computer. This limits your children's ability to get online when you are not around. Most children tend to access inappropriate sites when they are home alone or when a responsible adult is not around. By password protecting your computer, they won't have access to the Internet, if you are not there to allow it.

Block all inappropriate sites with filtering software. There are specific software brands available that allow parents the opportunity to block access to inappropriate sites. When your children try to visit pornographic sites, a page will instead appear, letting them know their access has been blocked due to adult content or language. While this stops access to most porn sites, some still manage to slip through the radar, so don't count on this method alone.

Place the computer in a common area of your home. This allows you - and everyone else in the home - to monitor what is on the computer screen at all times. Moreover, since there is little to no privacy, children will not feel emboldened to try to visit sites they know they should not be viewing.

Talk to your children about the inappropriate nature of pornography. Have a frank, open discussion, appropriate for their age group, to make them understand why they should not visit these sites. You don't have to go into explicit details about what these sites contain, but be honest that the material found within them is of a sexual nature and is not viewable by children their age.
